As we continue our work as a Positive Behaviour Intervention and Supports (PBIS) pilot school, we wanted to address a concern that school staff have observed on the playground.
Recently, we have observed an increase in rough play during recess and other outdoor activities. While we understand that children engage in various forms of play to release energy and build social skills, it is essential that we ensure the safety and well-being of all our students.
Rough play can unintentionally lead to injuries and create an environment that may be intimidating for some students. To work towards all Birchmount students feeling safe and included we are asking for your assistance by discussing the importance of appropriate and safe play with your child.
Please take a moment to discuss the following guidelines with your child:
1. Respect Others: Emphasize the importance of respecting personal space and understanding boundaries.
2. Use Your Words: Encourage your child to communicate with their peers using words to express themselves rather than using phyisical actions.
3. Be Kind: Remind your child to try and include everyone in their games and be mindful of other people’s feelings.
4. Tell the Teacher on Duty: If your child sees anything that is unsafe, please tell them to let the teacher on duty know right away. Staff members on duty always wear bright safety vests so they may be seen easily.
We appreciate your support in ensuring all our Bears feel safe and included on the playground. Your collaboration will help our school community be more consistent in our approach to safety
