Smart Watches and Cell Phone Free Policy
Dear Birchmount Families,It has quickly come to the attention of our teachers that many of our students received smart watches as a gift for the holidays. There have been many issues over the past couple of days in the classroom and they are causing many distractions, including students taking photos inside and outside the classroom without consent, and using educational tools like calculators without teacher permission.
Smartwatches are considered an extension of a cell phone and fall under the provincial cell phone-free policy in schools. This means that, during instructional time, students are expected to keep all smart devices, including smartwatches, off to minimize distractions and maintain a focused learning environment. Students are welcome to bring these watches to school, however, if those watches become a distraction or violate school expectations, students will be asked to keep them in their backpacks during school hours.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing this policy to ensure all students can fully engage in their learning.
